Speaking off snakes... what they lack in size, they make up for in quantity.

Looks like no one had spoke of them in 16 yearsI decided to necro because I wanted to make sure not to shock and dismay any members who have a phobia of snakes, and went looking for a thread with snake in the title to accomplish this.

I used to take care of an eight foot Colombian red tailed boa constrictor banned Lucy for a friend after his roommate brought home some kittens. He had the snake in a gym bag at work temporarily. The snake had a huge plexiglass enclosure large enough for me to duck inside through the side door for cleaning.
I didn't realize how fast snakes can slither away before this.
When you hold a snake that large in your lap your lap gets cold. Snakes can be cold and hard to relate to but do need socialization and enrichment.
Greg took Lucy back after about a year and eventually moved back to an apartment in our college town near a creek. He let the snake roam free, and eventually Lucy escaped, never to be found again.

Should've expected that.

They like live mice, too. Just gotta bash its head a little so it doesn't bite the snake.

Back in 1967 at a place in the mountains called Khe Sanh my squad was clearing fields of fire. We had taken down a couple of trees with shaped charges of C-4. We were working on another tree, cutting a notch for the charge when a really big snake dropped out the branches and landed in our midst. What did a squad of heavily armed Marines do? We ran like hell.

Rosie, the Rosy Boa ate her first adult mouse yesterday. Huzzah! We need to take her back upstairs and clean up the tank and probably give her a bath after she's had a bit of time to digest. We brought her downstairs to the kitchen because the friend that was taking care of the plants and pets while we were in Japan isn't good at climbing stairs.

Do NOT clean the cage with chlorine. Makes their scales fall off leaving raw meat exposed.

Either Rosy is much more active since we brough her down to the kitchen or we just notice it more. There's a lot more activity for her to notice down here instead of up in one of the empty bedrooms upstairs, empty except for all the stuff left behind by my son and all the stuff my Wife's been stuffing in that bedroom. The other "empty" bedroom is full of racks of shoes and clothes and you can't see the floor anymore. Anyway, we're thinking of moving the printers into my office which doesn't get much use anymore and moving Rosy there into the living room.

How ong has it been since her last meal. Alittle 5 gallon aquarium raises alot of mice. That and a small bag of dry dog food. This way you can controll the diet of the snake by the dog food you use.

I'm reposting this story from someone else.
True snake story, happened when I was in the Air Force stationed in Alabama.
In the apartments I lived, across the breezeway was a young couple. Bob had been out working on his car, while Mary had been to the grocery store.
Bob was in taking a shower while Mary was bringing in the sacks and had left the door open while putting the stuff away. From the kitchen see saw a snake come in and go under the couch.
She starts yelling and Bob (wrapped in a towel) comes running out. She franticly tells him a big snake was under the couch.
Now those unfamiliar with Alabama, need to know there are 4 kinds of venomous snakes that reside there.
Now you have to visualize this…
Bob (hot and wet from the shower, still wearing only a towel), grabs a broom and on his hands and knees starts poking around under the couch.
Their little dog gets away from Mary, decides to cold nose Bob in a place that no man ever expects to be cold nosed. Bob thinks he is snake bit, grabs his manhood and screams then faints, His panicked wife calls 911, The station is only a couple blocks away.
The Fire crew get there in seconds, she tells them that a snake bit him…DOWN THERE!!! Pointing to his manhood. The paramedics are checking him out while the fireguys flip the couch and find….. a foot-long Garter snake.
Ya, he earned a new name from then on…Snake-hunter.
